In Louisiana, more than 45% of fourthgrade students cannot read at even a basic level. Just 25% are considered proficient. These statistics are acritical. Illiteracy costs our nation’s health care system hundreds of billions of dollars per year and indicates future rates of poverty and crime.
GRAMBLING — Around Grambling State University, there are transplant Gramblinites who become GramFam by their service. On Thursday, GSU hosted a surprise retirement sendoff for Assistant to the President David “Rusty” Ponton in the Black and Gold Room on campus.
This weekend is the last chance for Lincoln Parish Library patrons to see the Celebrating Louisiane art exhibition on display in the lobby before the pieces travel to their next destination across the region. Put on by the Louisiana Art and Folk Festival and the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council, Celebrating Louisiane is a juried art competition embodying the culture, life and lagniappe of Louisiana.

Here in north Louisiana, we see a name like “Hebert” and we pronounce it “He-bert.” Down south that same name is pronounced “Ay-Bear.” Same goes for another name I just realized has different pronunciation, Clement. Up here, it’s “Clement.” Down around Thibodaux, that namerolls off tongues as “Clay-Maw.”
