Am I the only one who can still feel her mother’s back straighten up when you’ve done something of which she might not approve? I mean, it doesn’t matter where I am, how old I might be or what I’m doing, I can immediately sense if my mom wouldn’t approve of what’s going on.
The race track, located at the present (1959) site of Vetville and Louisiana Tech’s School of Agriculture, was built by Ben Smith. Always kept “as smooth as silk,” the track was one-half mile long. A large bleacher-type grandstand with roof was erected, and during the racing season concession stands were rented to individuals and clubs.

George Kenneth Parkman was born in Russell County, Alabama, on June 9, 1935, to Hilda Maggie Bryant and Leslie Huell Parkman. In 1946 the family moved to Salem, Alabama, where they ran a general merchandise grocery store for twenty years.
