Local girls represented by Girl Scout Service Unit 112 came together for a “Wonderfully Woodsy” themed campout recently at Camp Wawbansee in Simsboro. The girls partook in a variety of nature-themed activities such as writing poetry about nature, doing leaf rubbings, and taking a nature walk. The big event of the day, however, was the tree planting as part of the Girl Scouts of America National Service Project — The Tree Promise. The Tree Promise is part of an initiative, launched in 2021, to plant 5 million trees in 5 years, to help combat climate change. Six loblolly pines donated from Louisiana Tech University were planted on the camp property by the girls. Before planting the trees, each girl took the Tree Promise oath to protect and honor trees, locally and around the world.
