Playing safely in the sun

While many are outside enjoying RPAR’s summer activities like swimming, golfing and playing softball and tennis, we at the office of Parks and Recreation think it is imporatant to remind you about that big bright star in the sky. Believe it or not, the star that we are referring to is the sun.
It is estimated that only 55 percent of all Americans know that the sun is in fact a medium-sized star. The sun is so much closer to Earth that it looks much bigger and brighter and we can obviously feel heat radiating from it.

Telfah wins poster contest

Louisiana Jump$tart Coalition announced the winners of their 2011 Statewide Poster Contest.
Aban Telfah, a seventh-grade student at Ruston Junior High School, is the winner in the Middle School sixth through eighth-grade category. During their school awards ceremony, he was presented with a plaque, a commemorative T-shirt and a $100 deposit to a START Savings Account, a college savings plan offered by the state of Louisiana.

State Hall: celebration time

Big weekend ahead for annual induction ceremonies

Louisiana’s “biggest sports event” of the year will be varied as the individuals being honored in Natchitoches this weekend.
From a golf scramble to a tour of the historic city, intermixed with a “Meet and Greet” reception and press conference, will be among the highlights of the annual Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
The three-day event kicks off Thursday afternoon in downtown Natchitoches, where members of the state’s Hall of Fame selection committee and other dignitaries will take a “hard hat” tour of the construction site for the state-of-the-art museum that is due for completion in 2012 and will be located on Cane Street.

Watts was one ‘Slick’ basketball player

Donald “Slick” Watts is proof that perseverance does pay off.
Being persistent is what helped Watts excel on the basketball court.
After spending one season at Drake University, Watts yearned for a chance to play closer to his Mississippi home and to escape Iowa winters. He found that spot at Xavier-New Orleans.

Pine Hills Golf Classic proves successful

A large turnout of players and supporters helped make for a successful fourth edition of the Pine Hills Child Advocacy Center Golf Classic held recently at the Ruston Country Club.
Earning championship honors were John Lee, J.T. Lee, Justin Smith and David Goodwin.
Helping make the event a huge success again were District Attorney Bob Levy, Bienville Parish Sheriff John Ballance, Lincoln Parish Sheriff Mike Stone, T.J. Doss and Cody Richard.

District 5 squad now 16-2 after three wins

Louisiana’s District 5 baseball team improved to a 16-2 record with wins of 16-6, 10-0 and 14-3 against the NOLA squad in New Orleans this past weekend.
Jared Dye (4-0) got the victory in the 16-6 finale. Pacing the offense were Cade Thomason (two home runs, single, six RBIs, three runs), Jacob Stockton (three-for-three, double, two singles), Sloan Dieter (home run, double, three RBIs) and Mark Hatton (double, three RBIs).

Ellis receives honor at CWS

Coach Rob would understand this time.
Famed College Hall of Fame football coach Eddie Robinson was known for many sayings, one of which was “First one to cry is a sissy.”
But the late Grambling State University coach would have been proud of his colleague and friend Wilbert Ellis on Monday, tears and all.
