Phillip Wayne May passed peacefully from this life on December 26, 2016 after a short illness. Phil was born on October 13th, 1934 of Amelia Clark May and Phillip N. May at Smackover, Arkansas. Phil attended El Dorado High and joined the Air Force upon graduation. He left the Air Force in August of 1957 as a staff sergeant. After his military service, Phil attended Louisiana Tech University, graduating in 1965 with a degree in electrical engineering. Phil then went to work for the General Electric Company until his retirement.

Hunt, Martin named as top civic award winners

in

A Ruston businessman and a co-founder of a local animal rescue agency have been selected to receive the top two civic awards in Lincoln Parish.
Trott Hunt has been named the 2016 Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Robert E. Russ Award winner. Sue Martin is the 2016 Ruston Rotary Club Bill Best Humanitarian Award winner.
The awards will be presented during the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet set for 6 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Ruston Civic Center. A number of other Chamber and civic organization honors will also be handed out during the event

Law enforcement urges firework safety

Local law enforcement agencies warn residents to stay cautious when using fireworks for New Year’s Eve.
Some areas, including Ruston and Simsboro, do not allow fireworks.
Ruston Police Department Deputy Chief Clint Williams said the reason is because they want all residents safe.
“We like to make sure the residents are safe,” he said. “If anybody hears any firework activity they should call the police.”
Other local municipalities will allow fireworks.

Revamped garbage, trash collection to begin Tuesday

Come New Year’s Day, the rules for garbage and trash change in the city of Ruston.
Household garbage pickup drops to once a week; yard trash placed in free, heavy-duty debris bags gets picked up within 72 hours of notifying authorities; and residential curbside recycling begins.
The new rules also extend recycling and household garbage pickup to parish residents living within three miles of the Ruston city limits.
The garbage and trash changes, which have been in the works for about a year, are all about revenue and efficiency, Mayor Ronny Walker said.

Police seek suspect in pistol-whipping

Ruston police are asking for the public’s help in locating the suspect in a domestic battery that occurred Thursday during which the victim was struck with a handgun.
The suspect, Sancarlos Cordes Traylor, 26, of Farmerville, reportedly fled the area in a white Ford Crown Victoria and may have headed back to Union Parish, Ruston Deputy Police Chief Clint Williams said morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:14 p.m. in the 700 block of Second Avenue.
