Firewood in August — green wood will burn, but too much internal moisture will greatly reduce its fuel value. The term seasoned wood (cut and left to dry) is often used. To achieve 100 percent of the heating value from firewood, cut wood should season for 12 months. Cutting and drying wood during this time of year will greatly increase the available heat from the firewood. Firewood cut now and left to dry until the winter season can be the difference between having wood with a 90 percent fuel value as compared to green firewood with a percent fuel value of 63 percent.

Tech athletics giving back

The world of college athletics is about much more than sports.
Most people realize how much the business world is involved with college athletics, but many might not realize the real world lessons student-athletes are being taught.
The Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters learned such a lesson earlier this month when they visited the residents of Princeton Place, a rehabilitation center and nursing home in Ruston.

Seize opportunity for 4-H enrollment

We have already had many parents and students asking about how to enroll their child in 4-H and when they can. 4-H enrollment will begin in September for Lincoln Parish Schools and we are looking forward to working with the youth of Lincoln Parish this year. We have some great educational programs planned for monthly club meetings and we have many fun experiences planned for the parish as well.

Rolly Walker and Rev. Leslie Stephens. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Funeral services for Coach Wyman Lee Collie, 84, of Gilbert, Louisiana, will be held  10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 28, 2014, at Winnsboro First Baptist Church, Winnsboro, LA. with Rev. Jerry Grant officiating, Interment will follow 2:30 P.M., at Forest Lawn Memorial in Ruston, LA.  The family will receive friends at Community Memorial Funeral Home, Winnsboro, LA on Wednesday evening, August 27th from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M.  Coach Collie passed from this life on Monday, August 25, 2014, after a journey through Alzheimer’s, yet a journey that never took his smile and wit.
