Basketball fund-raiser a winning move

Former high school and area university athletes, local coaches and other community members displayed their expertise on the court in the game designed to entertain.
Thanks to all those who got out to play in the game, provide half-time entertainment or volunteered to help in some other way. Also, a big thanks is due to all those who attended. The large turnout gave a shot in the arm to local athletics and a boost to March of Dimes funding for research to prevent premature births.

CVB finds location for new home

The five finalists ranged between 1.7 and 1.84 acres in size, and from $5 to $8 a square foot in cost, Strebeck said.
“The property on 167 costs significantly less than the other pieces of property that were located on the I-20 Service Road,” Strebeck said.
Of the other four locations that made the final list, one was already under contract for sale. The other three were located along the I-20 Service Road: two between the U.S. 167 exit and Tech exit, and one west of the Tech exit.
CVB Chairman Mickey McHale said there is a limit on how much should be paid for property.

Choudrant bond issue revisited

I believe that even if a person does not have a child or grandchild in the school system, it is the responsibility of everyone in a community to ensure students are in an environment that is safe and conducive to learning. Some people might have the attitude that they have worked hard to build their financial resources, and they should not have to give money to a school that they presently have nothing to do with.

RHS overtaken by Rebs, 9-8

Pitcher Bunk Coronado picked up the win for the Rebels by pitching just two-thirds of an inning in the sixth and facing two batters, but it was Tyler Thrailkill that was the real pitcher of note for West Monroe in the game; entering the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and retiring Ruston’s five, six, and seven hitters in order to secure the game.
“Tyler has been like that for us all year,” West Monroe head coach Mark Sims said. “I canít say enough about him and the job he did coming in and shutting them down.”

Housing boom blows across GSU campus

The idea is one that has a lot of merit, and not just in making the lives better for current students.
Realistically, quality of education is just one of the things that prospective students consider when choosing a college or university; living conditions factor high on their list of concerns
Having outdated and unattractive residence halls has done the university in Grambling no good in the past — some students have crossed GSU off of their lists simply based on the condition of the residence halls.

My job has gone to the dogs

Ace and Iko are similar in a lot of ways — both being dual-purpose German shepherds, while Ben is a super-friendly golden retriever who is solely trained in narcotic detection.
What struck me the most about all of the dogs was their kind demeanor. An intelligent person would have a healthy respect for such powerful animals, and I like to think that my parents raised no fools.

Tech family remembers Hokie victims

Hart said two of her friends were victims in the massacre, but she was thankful so many Tech students showed up Monday to show their support.
“It’s a blessing to see this many unite for a college so far away,” she said. “(The tragedy) hurt my heart.”
Hart said she had always grown up believing she would go to Virginia Tech, but life took a different turn and brought her to Louisiana Tech, 888 miles away.
“I could have been in that classroom that day,” Hart said. “God brought me here instead. I had two friends that died, and I could have been in there with my friends that day.”

International Day benefits everyone

Nouha Salim, of Lebanon, agreed that this was a great way for all the different cultures of the area to come together.
“I do this every year with Tech,” Salim said. “I went to Tech, and they do a great job. This is one of the best programs for international students. It gets everybody involved.”
Residents agreed.
Many got to sample food and learn about various cultures, religions, customs and even clothing styles.
