Lacy capped super career at Tech

One of the most dominating women’s basketball players in the storied history of Louisiana Tech’s program didn’t begin her college career wearing the Columbia blue uniform of the Lady Techsters.
Instead, 6-foot-4-inch center Venus Lacy laced up the high tops in 1984-85 as a freshman at Old Dominion – one of Louisiana Tech’s biggest rivals in the 1970s and ’80s.

Techsters ready to start WAC soccer play

Olivia Lukasewich have tuned up for Western Athletic Conference soccer competition in the right way.
Behind two goals from the senior, the Lady Techsters’ team defeated Southeastern Louisiana 2-1 in recent action at Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
Now it’s on to the start of the WAC campaign, as Tech will play host to New Mexcio State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Lady Techsters’ Soccer Complex.

Prisoner escapes

The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office is currently searching for an escaped prisoner from the Lincoln Parish Detention Center. Moses Marcell Cooper escaped the detention center sometime between midnight and 5 a.m. today. He could still be in the area, although he is believed to have family in Texas and Franklin Parish.
Under the custody of the Department of Corrections, Cooper was serving time on an armed robbery conviction.

‘Saturday in the Park’ draws crowd

CHOUDRANT — There was a group of people who set out to give a whole new meaning to the term “Porta-Potty” on Saturday, and that’s just what they did.
The Village of Choudrant held its annual “Saturday in the Park” events, and among them was the regularly scheduled Outhouse Grand Nationals.

110 years celebrated

GSU marks Founder’s Week with activities

This week Grambling State University will hold several activities to celebrate its 110th anniversary. On Monday President Frank G. Pogue and Grambling City Mayor Edward Jones began the week by signing an official proclamation at the Bust of the Founder for the opening ceremony, which followed by the Founder’s Week Fellowship Breakfast in the Black and Gold Room.

Tech displays new pieces in art gallery

Louisiana Tech University opened a new art exhibit for the residents of the area to view something that is out of the ordinary.
Liz Miller will be displaying site specific installation artwork. Stephen Eakin will have installation pieces, as well as sculptures on display for attendees to view.
Miller, a Minnesota native, said she likes to create her work for the space in which it will be displayed.

Jones seeks sheriff spot

Larry P. Jones has announced plans to seek the position of sheriff of Lincoln Parish in the upcoming Oct.22 election.
His campaign slogan is “A New Vision for a Continuing Task.”

CBS to air documentary

CBS Sports Network presents “1st & Goal in the Bronx: Grambling vs. Morgan State 1968,” a documentary about the monumental game played between Grambling and Morgan State, the first historically black college football game played in New York City. The one-hour documentary airs at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday exactly 43 years after the game was played at Yankee Stadium in front of more than 60,000 fans.  Actor Keith David narrates the program.

Area still needs rain even after fall arrives

Man — I thought that a change in weather to cooler temperatures would give us a rain. Well I guess I got mine.
I got one of the two-inch rains on one afternoon and the next day I was over at the Walmart parking lot when one of the six-inch rains came by.
As the rain hit the hot pavement, steam came up, and the raindrops that were about six inches apart would dry up and the drop disappeared into the air, just like the rain drops from the rain that produced drops two inches apart the day earlier. It has cooled off and 79 degree nights feel cool.

U.S. economy needs change

Despite promises of a better economy, we are almost in the financial “tank” if things keep going the way they are, especially with concerns on Wall Street and in the housing market. Let us not forget the employment situation; let us not forget that our state and region are not immune. But don’t worry, we have new proposed legislation being submitted by the White House, with very little chance of passage.
