GSU’s Holbrook honored

Grambling State’s Dion Holbrook has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week after throwing a complete seven-inning no-hitter in his seventh start of the season last weekend to help Grambling rout Prairie View A&M 11-0. The Tigers will next play a three-game series at Arkansas-Pine Bluff starting with a doublehader at noon Saturday. The GSU softball team will play a three-game home series against Prairie View A&M starting with a 2 p.m. doubleheaders on Saturday.

Techsters sign shooting guard

Louisiana Tech head coach Tyler Summitt added another piece to his program’s puzzle on Thursday, signing Gulf Coast State College guard Rochelle Vasquez to a national letter of intent.
Vasquez is a 5-foot, 10-inch shooting guard who won a national homeschool title as a prepster and who has spent the past year playing on the junior college level.
“The big thing she will bring to our team is a maturity level,” Summitt said. “She will be a great leader and will bring a great work ethic to the court. She comes from a great junior college program.

Creek reschedules; Choudrant ousted

Lauren Menzina and the third-seeded Cedar Creek Lady Cougars have rescheduled their Class 1A home playoff game against 14th-seeded St. John to 4 p.m. Saturday at due to today’s rainy weather. In other local action, 10th seeded Anacoco upset seventh seeded Choudrant 16-3 Friday in five innings in Choudrant.

Tech schedules homecoming date

Louisiana Tech University officials announced Wednesday that the school’s annual Homecoming weekend will surround the Bulldogs’ Nov. 7 football game against North Texas.
Louisiana Tech is 65-22-2 all-time in Homecoming games after defeating Western Kentucky University, 59-10, in last year’s Homecoming contest.
The Bulldogs have hosted North Texas in four Homecoming games in the past, compiling a 3-1 record against the Mean Green.
Last season Tech defeated North Texas, 42-21, in the Conference USA opener for both teams.
Tech leads the overall series against the Mean Green, 7-6.

Louisiana Tech University Theatre is sliding into home plate with its’ final production of the 2014-15 season with a wonderfully funny and toughing production of Brighton Beach Memoirs. Brighton Beach Memoirs is the first of a series that the Pulitzer Prize winner author, Neil Simon wrote. This series is autobiographical and this particular one will have the audience captivated.

Suicidal prevention is available

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Louisiana Tech University are hosting the Out of the Darkness walk for suicide prevention at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Argent Pavillion.
The campus walk raises funds and awareness for educational programs, research and offers support for survivors of suicide loss.
According to AFSP.org, in 2013, 41,149 suicides were reported in the United States. That’s one suicide every 12.8 minutes. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Americans. It is the second leading cause of death for individuals ages 18-24.

Bring back life to suicidal people

We live in trying times.
No one ever said life was easy, but it is never the end of the world when things seem as if they could not get any worse.
Unfortunately for some, there comes a point when things seem so bad that they choose to end their life.
I have been close to four people who decided to end their lives within the last three years.
On Wednesday this week, I received a call about a friend who was found that afternoon.

Event to encourage families

Celebrating youth who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder is the main goal of an event set for Saturday, Tiffany White said.
White, who works with the Hope Center for Autism, said this will be the third annual Hope for Autism 5k with a new addition.
“We partnered with the Leadership Lincoln Team to really expand the Family Fun Day,” she said. “We have a lot of people who come in for the walk or the race and then leave before we are able to give out awards.

Local’s movie premieres

Soto enters Skid Row

Among the Discarded, a documentary made by local artist Trent Dion Soto, will be shown from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the Dixie Theatre.
In the documentary, Soto immerses himself into the homeless community of Skid Row, Los Angeles, where he lives as a homeless man for 30days to promote awareness of the issue.

Sports exhibit coming to LPL

The Lincoln Parish Library Board of Control will be the sight of a Hometown Sports exhibit, which will feature local sports figures.
The Lincoln Parish Library was awarded an LEH Grant for a Smithsonian traveling exhibit, Library Director Vivian McCain said.
“The exhibit is called Hometown Sports,” McCain said. “I’m telling you this is going to be a fabulous exhibit.”
McCain said there are several local sports legends on the list to participate in the exhibit.
