Funeral services for Mr. James W. “Jay” Landry, age 44 of Dubach LA, will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, October 17, 2014 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Dubach, LA. Officiating the service will be Rev. Connie Smith and Rev. Don Cardin. Burial will follow in Fellowship Cemetery in Dubach, LA under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston, LA.

Mayoral candidates to debate Thursday

Ruston mayoral candidates Bill Elmore and Ronny Walker say they’re looking forward to Thursday evening’s mayoral debate set for 7 p.m. at Howard Auditorium on the Louisiana Tech University campus.
“I’m very excited about it. This is something that needs to be done with all campaigns,” Walker said. “Our citizens need to be informed.”
Elmore called the pending debate an example of “America at its finest.”
“I think this is America at it’s finest when you can get two candidates together, ask questions and get answers,” Elmore said.

RHS seniors reach next tier in National Merit

Ruston High School seniors Austin Meng and Nicholas Ruff have qualified as National Merit semifinalists.
About 1.4 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, and Austin and Nicholas were two of 16,000 to make the cut.
Austin has maintained a 4.0 GPA and scored a 35 on the ACT. A member of the two-time state championship RHS Swim Team, he has been inducted into the National Honor Society and serves as a Bearcat Mentor.

LPPJ finalizes rules for property sales

Process includes employing third party to complete sale

The Lincoln Parish Police Jury approved a final ordinance for the sale of adjudicated property to the public during the regular monthly meeting Tuesday night.
Adjudicated property is a parcel of land on which the property taxes were not paid and therefore, after about five years, becomes the property of the police jury. A police jury can do as it pleases with the property without assuming liability, but there are several avenues with potential complications that can come with the sale of the property.

Amendment would affect medical trust funds, provider fees

Editor’s Note: Louisiana voters will be asked to decide on 14 proposed amendments to the Louisiana Constitution on the Nov. 4 ballot. The Leader will be running a series of articles provided by the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana to better inform voters about the issues that will be on the ballot.
Amendment No. 1 on the ballot for Nov. 4 will concern medical trust fund and health care provider base rates.

Caldwell blocks Ebola waste in La.

A temporary restraining order has been granted blocking the disposal of incinerated waste from the Dallas Ebola victim’s personal items and belongings at a Louisiana landfill, Attorney General Buddy Caldwell said.
It was reported that six truckloads of potential Ebola-contaminated material collected from the apartment where the Dallas Ebola victim became ill were brought to Port Arthur, Texas, late last week to be processed at the Veolia Environmental Services incinerator.

Piney Hills selects Sweet Adeline Extraordinaire

Chris Brady has been named local Sweet Adeline Extraordinaire for 2014 by Piney Hills Harmony Chorus, in addition to being on the organization’s regional Wall of Fame.
Brady, of Homer, was honored in Ruston at the chorus’ annual awards banquet and in Houston at regional competition and the Fall Regional Meeting.
Brady’s 31 fellow Piney Hills Harmony members voted her as the member who “embodies the true spirit of Sweet Adelines International, has a special spark of joy and pride in her chorus and goes above and beyond what is expected,” among other worthy attributes.

Bulldogs rested after bye week

Tech returns to action with 11 a.m. Saturday home game

Louisiana Tech’s mid-season bye week gave the Bulldogs a chance to heal and rest up before heading down the stretch.
Standing at 3-3 overall and 2-0 in Conference USA play, the Bulldogs know they control their own destiny and must get back down to business starting with an 11 a.m. home contest on Saturday against Texas-San Antonio.
