Terrion S. Atkins, Jr., 18, of Jonesboro, was arrested in Ruston on Wednesday afternoon on a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Bre’Untae Hicks, 27, also of Jonesboro, last weekend.

Jackson Parish Sheriff Andy Brown said Atkins was taken into custody at a residence in Ruston and was transported to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for booking.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Atkins, whom Brown described as a repeat offender in several criminal cases in the past, after the deadly shooting at the Circle K convenience store in Jonesboro. The JPSO and Jonesboro police responded to the scene at 11:40 p.m. Friday and found Hicks with a gunshot wound. He was transported to the Jackson Parish Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Within the last 10 minutes or so we found Mr. Atkins in Ruston at a residence,” Brown said Wednesday afternoon. “He will be booked, and then we will transport him back to Jackson Parish where he will face this charge.

“This is someone we are familiar with. Mr. Atkins has been involved in many cases not only here in Jackson Parish, but also in Lincoln Parish,” Brown added.

A second homicide also took place early Saturday morning at approximately 1:30 a.m. along Hwy. 167 in Jackson Parish between North Hodge and Quitman, resulting in the death of Dee Jackson, another resident of Jonesboro. A woman riding in a car with Jackson was also struck by gunfire and tranported by med flight to a hospital for treatment.

“That particular case is a little more complicated, although we know what all went on and we have a good idea of the people involved,” Brown said. “Since it involves more people, it’s taking us a little longer with our investigation.”

The altercation between Atkins and Hicks allegedly began after Jonesboro-Hodge’s Homecoming football game Friday night. Hicks was the son of Jonesboro-Hodge High School football coach Terrance Blankenship.

More information on the second homicide will be released as it becomes available.
