October is domestic violence awareness month
DART has organized many great events throughout October. We have planned something for everyone, with activities for enjoyment, celebration, and remembrance. Following are definite dates, but be sure to check out our Facebook page (D.A.R.T.) for additional information.
This week is kick-off week. We are asking DART partners to wear purple, the official color of domestic violence awareness.
Show your support by wearing something purple every day of the week, but if you don’t have that much purple in your wardrobe, we will be giving our purple ribbons that you can wear on your lapel, your shirt or blouse, purse, baseball cap, or diaper bag.
You can even polish your nails with purple polish to show your support.
Today is Dairy Queen Day. Who doesn’t love a blizzard from DQ? For every blizzard sold, DART receives a dollar. Bring the family, bring your friends, bring your classmates or ball team and enjoy a sweet treat. Grab a blizzard for breakfast (if you have teenagers or college students, you know this is a thing), as an after-school snack, or get one after church that Wednesday. You’ll be helping DART.
October 23 is the 7th Annual Walk-a-Mile DART Fundraiser at Lincoln Parish Park. The fun starts at 10 a.m., and costs very little.
This event originated in Australia in 2001 with a men’s march to stop violence against women, but now includes violence Kris against men as well.
The young women of Alpha Chi Omega Beta Psi at Louisiana Tech have done an amazing job of hosting the most fun, familyfriendly, and colorful awareness event, and this year Kappa Sigma fraternity is co-hosting.
So come to our scenic park and support DART by walking a mile. You can register at Walk A Mile — to a close, we will gather to remember those killed as a result of Domestic Violence.
Coming together as a community and calling out the names of each victim is a way to honor each life and assure their loved ones that they will never be forgotten.

October 26 at 5:30 p.m. DART will hold our Annual Domestic Violence Candlelight Vigil at The Bridge Community Church downtown campus.
As the month draws to a close, we will gather to remember those killed as a result of Domestic Violence. Coming together as a community and calling out the names of each victim is a way to honor each life and assure their loved ones that they will y never be forgotten. arney We believe your hearts will be moved as you see the beautiful display of silent witnesses standing on the Civic Center lawn that week representing some of the victims whose voices have been forever silenced by this horrible crime.
Rick Godley will be hosting a remembrance show on his live stream, godleyworks.com. He will be highlighting the victims of domestic homicide in our community and all shows will be saved as on demand podcasts. Rick will be saying a few words about the victims before he plays a song commemorating their lives.
Last year we were not able to gather for our candlelight vigils due to COVID, so Rick created this radio tribute, and it was a huge success. As one of the speakers, I was moved at how much thought he put into choosing the perfect song for each victim.
There will also be guest hosts, a survivor story and much more. The dates of this unique vigil format will be announced soon, and then tune into Rix Mix Community Radio on Facebook as we honor lives lost to domestic homicide in DART’s seven parishes.
