Ruston’s Christmas parade has a new route this year.

Instead of the traditional course through downtown, the parade will travel part of the new Monroe Street Corridor, starting and ending at Ruston High School.

City officials say the new route is safer, avoids the possibility of being stalled by train, and allows parade-goers to watch from new, wider sidewalks on the corridor.

The parade is set for 10 a.m. Dec. 16.

Floats and other units will line up at Ruston High School, then head north on James Street, take a right onto the I-20 service road, proceed east, turn right onto the new Monroe Street that runs behind City Hall, take a right onto West Alabama where it will travel to Everett Street and turn back to RHS.

“It’s a really good route,” Amy Stegall, Ruston’s Main Street director and community coordinator, said.

The block of Monroe Street between East Georgia Avenue and West Alabama will be open by parade time, city officials said.

This year’s parade is being organized by the Quota USA.

The theme is “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Local radio personality and Lincoln Parish Museum Executive Director Rick Godley will serve as grand marshal.

This year’s parade will be limited to floats and vehicles, event chairperson Claire Givens said. Organizers expect as many as 45 units to participate in the parade.

Entry deadline is Dec. 11. Applications can be picked up and should be returned to the Ruston Lincoln Visitors Center, located at 2111 North Trenton St.
