Student learning to teach blind struck by truck
A Louisiana Tech University graduate student studying to teach cane travel to the blind is recovering from injuries sustained Wednesday afternoon when she was hit by a lumber truck.
Police say 23-year-old Jennifer Wuebbens was acting as a blind person as part of her training when she was hit near the corner of North Trenton Street and West Georgia Avenue around 4 p.m.
Wuebbens, who is sighted, was wearing sleep shades and carrying a white cane, Ruston Police Chief Steve Rogers said. Police initially thought Wuebbens was blind.
Authorities said she was on the south side of the traffic light at the intersection when she apparently stepped into the path of a truck that was turning left. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Rogers said the incident remains under investigation.
