Ruston police have a person of interest in a weekend shooting that’s left one man dead and another on life support.

Robert Thompson, of Jonesboro, and Tracy Hampton, of Arcadia, were both shot in the head around midnight Friday at an apartment complex on West Alabama Avenue. Thompson later died of his wounds, authorities said Tuesday.

Officers responded to a shots-fired call at Park Ridge Estates and found the two men, one lying on the ground close to a vehicle, and another inside the vehicle, Ruston Deputy Police Chief Henry Wood said.

Investigation into the incident is ongoing, he said.

Reports of a possible third victim could not be confirmed.

Thompson, who reportedly went by the nickname Contruband Rocc, was a person of interest in the Oct. 7 murder of Devontre “Dee” Jackson that occurred in Jackson Parish.

“We think that Robert was connected to that,” Jackson Parish Sheriff Andy Brown said Tuesday.

Jackson was struck by gunfire as he drove along Hwy. 167 between North Hodge and Quitman. A female passenger was also hit and wounded.

Jackson died at the scene. Kurae Cottonham, of Jonesboro, was later arrested on second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder charges stemming from the shooting.

Jackson Parish authorities said at the time they were looking for others in connection with Jackson’s murder.

Brown said the incident was likely drug-related.

“It’s more drugs than anything,” he said. “It all stems from money and drugs.”
