A.E. Phillips student Melissa Le was honored on the state level as Middle School Student of the Year.
Lincoln Parish’s own Melissa Le has been named Louisiana’s 2022 Middle School Student of the Year.
The state Department of Education named Le, an eighth grader at A.E. Phillips Laboratory School, the winner during a Wednesday night ceremony at the Louisiana State Museum.
The three overall winners at each age level were selected based on academic achievement, leadership skills, career and technical achievements, character and service to their schools and communities, according to an LDOE press release.
After being named Student of the Year for AEP and later the whole Lincoln Parish School District, Le went up against 14 other district winners across northwest Louisiana and was declared the Region 1 Student of the Year in March.
She and the six other middle school finalists were interviewed by the state selection committee and submitted portfolios and writing samples to aid in the selection.
While earning a 4.0 GPA, Le participates in student council, National Junior Honor Society, choir, and competitions like Mathcounts, robotics and the Science Olympiad.
Le is also an accomplished pianist, competitive swimmer and community theater participant. She’s also active in Girl Scouts and 4-H.
Her business Made by Melissa Macarons sells her homemade macarons and donates a portion of proceeds to the Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home.
She’s also the reigning Miss Louisiana Teen Volunteer and stands on a platform of encouraging equal opportunities and awareness for girls in STEM fields.
