Ruston remains unanimous No. 1 in LSWA Class 5A poll

Ruston (6-0, 1-0), coming off a hard-fought 22-21 win at Ouachita on Friday to open district play, remains the top dog in Class 5A in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll ahead of week seven.

The Bearcats’ defense came through in the win over the Lions, holding Ouachita to 4-13 on third down and four punts. But the biggest stand of the night came after Ouachita got the game to a one-point margin – lining up to tie the game on a PAT with under 40 seconds left. Ruston special teams blockers did their job, getting a hand on the Lion’s kick attempt to send it spiraling well short of the uprights to seal the victory.

Linebacker Zheric Hill led the defense with 7 tackles, 1 TFL, and a pass breakup.

The Bearcats return to Hoss Garrett Stadium for the first time in over a month this Friday to host district rival Neville (6-0, 1-0), who is now No. 4 in this week’s poll – tied with Catholic-Baton Rouge.
