When an armistice was called on the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the Great War’s hostilities ceased. Although World War I did not officially end until the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, the day, month and hour when the fighting stopped was eventually observed as the first Armistice Day in 1919.
