Each of my grade school classes was divided into three reading groups. Group 1 was the strong readers; Group 2, the average readers, and Group 3, the weak readers.

Nobody tried to mask our abilities with cute names like Bluebirds, Redbirds and Robins. We were what we were, and some of us could read better than others. Typically, the kids who were good readers were still good readers when we went to high school; the average readers, still average, and the weak readers, still weak.
