On June 19, 1865 Major General Gordon Granger with the Union Army, marched into Galveston, Texas declaring all slaves to be free. Although the event was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had become law, General Robert E. Lee had jut surrendered a few months prior. That more than likely warm day in June 1865 began a long tradition known as Juneteenth.
