The city of Ruston has won a safety award from the international Water Environment Federation for an accident-free year at the north wastewater treatment plant.

The George W. Burke Jr. Facility Safety Award is presented to wastewater treatment facilities that have exhibited the best safety records during the past calendar year.

“We put in a plan and followed it and haven’t had any accidents,” Jim Fraiser, north treatment plant supervisor, said.

He said the plant has been accident-free since 2009, the year the improved safety measures were implemented.
