Leader photo by KAYLA FRITH- Locally grown peaches from Mitcham’s Peach Orchard are a favorite among Lincoln Parish residents.

Plenty of cool weather and rain is going to make for a tasty Louisiana Peach Festival season according to local peach growers.

“We have started picking already,” Joe Mitcham, owner of Mitcham Farms, said. “We’ve got a good crop.”

The season, Mitcham said, is actually about 10 days later than average, even though last year’s season was similarly late.

“We had a lot of cool nights early on in the spring,” Mitcham said. “It takes warm weather and sunshine. We had over 1,200 chill hours, which is good. As long as we get over 800 to 900 chill hours, it’s good.”
