Being part of the Krewe of Life has more benefits that you think.

January is National Blood Donor Month, and each blood donation can help save up to three lives, according to the American Red Cross.

Every two seconds a person in the United States needs blood, and each year there are more than 15 million blood donations — which saves roughly 45 million people.

The No. 1 reason most people give as to why they do not donate blood is because they never thought about it or they don’t like needles.

But if a person started donating blood at age 17 and continued to do so every 56 days until they reached age 76, they would have donated 48 gallons of blood and potentially helped more than 1,000 people.

In the United States only 9 percent of people have O negative blood, which is the universal donor blood and can be given to people of all blood types.

All the while an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, less than 10 percent actually do each year.

Luckily in Ruston and Lincoln Parish we are home to hundreds of people who selflessly give back to their community.

And we urge those of you who have not given back to our community to do so in a way that has the potential to save lives.

Donating blood is a task that doesn’t take much time and can be accomplished on a lunch break. By donating blood you are ensuring that when an accident occurs the shelves are already stocked and emergency personnel can attend to an individuals’ needs.

Our local LifeShare Blood Center is located in the Graham Shopping Center.

Those who donate will be given a T-shirt showing their pledge to being part of the Krewe of Life.

So take a moment to stop by and help save a life, you’ll be glad you did and the possibilities are endless on who your donation may help save in our community.
