More than 30 people huddled under a portable outdoor pavilion during a driving rain Tuesday morning to watch local Boy Scouts retire unserviceable American flags.

During the ceremony, scouts from Troop 45 burned remnants of 110 worn flags. The ashes were buried in a specially marked gravesite in Ruston’s Forest Lawn Cemetery.

“This is a very solemn ceremony. It’s like a funeral. Matter of fact, it is a funeral for the American flag. We’re laying the flag to rest,” said J.D. Harper, commander of VFW Post 3615, the group that coordinates the annual flag retirement.
