Leader photo by NANCY BERGERON Jared Spiller, the late Elmore Mayfield’s grandson, welcomed visitors to the park named in honor his grandfather.

About 100 people gathered under a bright morning sun Saturday to praise the legacy of the late Ruston Alderman Elmore D. Mayfield and rename the city’s largest park in his honor.

Mayfield represented District 2, which encompasses the park, for 21 years. He died in office in 2014 of an apparent heart attack.
