It was an annual rite of summer when I was growing up.

Every July my mother, sister and I would head north from New Orleans for an extended trip to the Piney Hills of north Louisiana with one goal in mind: to bring back ice chests — several at least, if not more — filled with fresh, small, white cream peas along with purple hull peas that had been blanched and bagged — to stock our deep freezer until the next summer.
