Lincoln Parish voters face long primary ballot
The Oct. 12 primary ballot is going to be a long one in Lincoln Parish. Voters face as many as 24 races, including those for governor and a full slate of state officials. But not all of the races will be on the ballot in every precinct. As of the close of candidate qualifying Thursday, nine of the 12 Lincoln Parish Police Jury seats were contested. Races for sheriff, assessor and clerk of court are also on the ballot. Incumbent jurors Joe Henderson, who represents District 9, and Sharyon Mayfield, District 11, drew no opponents. Neither did Glenn Scriber, who will take incumbent Walter Pullen’s District 6 seat. Pullen is running for assessor. Coroner Dr. Mike Belue was the only parishwide official to go back in office unopposed. In the legislative races, both Reps. Chris Turner, R-Ruston, and Patrick Jefferson, D-Homer, were unopposed in their re-election bids. Both men represent parts of Lincoln Parish. Here’s a list of the local and district primary races.
Board of Elementary and Secondary Education
Stephen Chapman, R-Alexandria; Ashley Ellis, R-Monroe. Chapman is a dentist and member of the Rapides Parish School Board; Ellis, is assistant principal at Neville High School. Incumbent Gary Jones is not seeking reelection.
Senate, District 29
Incumbent Sen. Jay Luneau, D-Alexandria, drew one opponent, Randy Wiggins, R-Pineville. The district includes part of Lincoln Parish.
Senate, District 33
West Monroe businessman Wade Bishop, a Republican, and Stewart Cathey, R-Sterlington, are running for the seat now held by Sen. Mike Walsworth, R-West Monroe. Walsworth term-limited out. Cathey runs a commercial agricultural and real estate group. District 33 includes part of Lincoln Parish.
Senate, District 35
Incumbent Sen. Jim Fannin, R-Jonesboro, drew two opponents: state Rep. “Jay” Morris, R-Monroe, and auto body business owner Matt Parker, R-Calhoun. District 35 includes part of Lincoln Parish.
Lincoln Parish Sheriff
Sheriff Mike Stone is retiring. Three men want his job: Louisiana Tech University Police Chief and former Ruston Police Chief Randal Hermes, Independent-Ruston; former LPSO Deputy George Webb, R-Choudrant; and current LPSO Chief Deputy Stephen Williams, No Party-Choudrant.
Clerk of Court
Incumbent Clerk of Court Linda Cook, No-Party, Ruston, drew one opponent, Troy “TRoy” Hughes, I-Choudrant.
Assessor
Incumbent Assessor Sheila Bordelon is retiring. Two people are seeking the job: Chief Deputy Assessor Billy Mac McBride, RRuston; and Walter Pullen, R-Ruston. Pullen is currently the District 6 parish police juror.

Vienna mayor, council
Incumbent Mayor Walter Carpenter, RDubach, was unopposed, as were council members David Cargill, No Party-Ruston; Linda Graham, R-Ruston; and Billy Jack Talton, R-Dubach.
Dubach District B council member
Incumbent Pam Freeman, R-Dubach, was unopposed. Freeman is filling Donna Lewis’ unexpired term.
