Editor’s Note: This is the first of a two-part series on suicide.

In the past, the World Health Organization has estimated that approximately one million people die each year from suicide. Two more persons can be added to this list: Kate Spade, fashion designer, and Anthony Bourdain, chef, travel host and author.

Each day, estimated 18-22 veterans die by suicide. A prominent Ruston public official was candid about her struggle with a mental health condition; a few years ago, she committed suicide. About the same time, a local professional athlete also committed suicide.
