Douglas Clyde Barnett
Douglas Clyde Barnett was born December 21, 1924 in Hico, LA, and went to be with his Lord November 21, 2020 while surrounded by his family at his home in Hico at the age of 95. Visitation will be held at Hico Baptist Church at 9:00 AM, Monday, November 23,2020 followed by graveside services at Henry Cemetery at 11:00 AM, with Bro. Don Cardin and Bro. Jeff Hurst officiating under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston, LA.
Doug played football and basketball for Hico High School. He then pursued an engineering degree at Louisiana Polytechnic University (AKA Louisiana Tech University) where he also ran track.
He was drafted into the Navy in 1943 serving as Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class on the USS Unicoy at the Battle of Leyte Gulf inthe Philippines Islands. After the war, he returned home to Hico where he met the love of his life while diving a taxi.
He married Lorelle Fuller and raised five children in Hico, LA. He was a lifelong member of Hico Baptist Church. Although his home was always Hico, he traveled extensively across 49 states andmost of Canada with the Good Sam’s Club. He is known for his ability to take apart and fix anything. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved to listen to his grandkids and great grandkids fishing and hunting stories. He worked as a farmer raising hay, cattle and timber for most of his adult life.
Mr. Barnett is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Evelyn Barnett; a brother, Brooks Barnett; a brother-in-law, Thomas Farley and son-in-law’s: Jimmy Houck and Ray Cooper.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Lorelle Fuller Barnett of Hico and a sister, LeJuantaRhew of Westlake; daughters: Sandra Cooper of Bernice, Dorothy Brown (Charles) of Farmerville, Kaye Houck of Hico, a son Sonny Barnett (Terry) of Hico, and daughter Bonnie Taylor (Louis) of Texarkana, TX; grandchildren: Darren Cooper (Marcie) of Bernice, Doug Cooper (Tiffany) of Bernice, Angela Strozier (Rusty) of Ruston, Marcy Kavanaugh (Kenny) of Farmerville, Lisa Lowery (Terry) of Hico, David Houck (Tracey) of Quantico, VA, William Barnett (Crystal) of Ruston, Daniel Houck of Hico, Christina Beebe (Aaron) of Montgomery, AL and Chris Taylor (Stephanie) of Columbia, SC; 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, a host of other family members and many, many friends.
When asked recently about what he was most proud of, the life and love of his family was what he cherished the most. When asked what he would like to be remembered for, he only asked that the actions of his life should speak for itself having never spoken an unkind word of anyone.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the amazing ladies who have provided in-home care for Daddy including, but not limited to: Martha, Kim, Sydney, Deja, Irene, and Katherine and also Dr. Benson Grigsby and his staff.
