Dr. Matthew Ragan Green, Jr.

Dr. Matthew Ragan Green, Jr. departed this life on August 6, 2024, after an extended illness.

Dr. Matthew Ragan Green, Jr. was born in Ruston, on September 23, 1948. He was the son of Dr. Matthew Ragan Green, Sr. and Aline Richards Green, who pre-deceased him.

After graduating high school in Ruston, Dr. Green attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he made many lasting friendships, which continue to this day. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1971 with a B.S. in Pre- med and graduated from Louisiana State University Medical School-New Orleans, in 1974. His internship and residency were completed at Louisiana State University Medical School, Shreveport.

Dr. Green was in private practice of Orthopedic Surgery from 1979 to 2013 in Shreveport, primarily affiliated with Schumpert Medical Center and Highland Clinic and Hospital. He was also assistant clinical professor, Department of Orthopaedics, at LSU Medical School.

Dr. Green was Board Certified with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

He served as chief of surgery, medical and dental staff president at Schumpert Medical Center.

Dr. Green was past President of the Shreveport Medical Society; past President of the Louisiana Orthopaedic Association; past Member of the National Board of Councilors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; past systemwide Chief of Staff of CHRISTUS Schumpert Health System, past President of the CHRISTUS Schumpert Foundation; and a past Board Member of the Louisiana Tech Foundation.

He was recognized as a “Paul Harris Fellow” by Rotary International.

It was apparent that the practice of medicine played an important part in Dr. Green’s life, which began at an early age, as he often accompanied his father, Dr. Ragan Green, Sr., on rounds at the Green Clinic in Ruston. One of his fondest childhood memories was riding the Grambling Tigers Football Team bus to games when his father was the team doctor.

In 1996 Ragan married Margaret Furrh Green, his best friend and the love of his life, “Maggie.” This began a new journey for Ragan, out of the realm of science labs, and into the world of history, art, and museums. Many vacations were spent along the East Coast, Boston, Washington D. C. and Colonial Williamsburg.

Ragan and Margaret were attendees at Washington Mardi Gras for over thirty years, members of the Shreveport-Bossier Host Group, and chairmen of the Host Group for over a decade. They thoroughly enjoyed the time they spent in Washington D. C., and valued the many friendships they made throughout the state of Louisiana and beyond.

Throughout the years they were inseparable, where you saw one, you saw the other, each supportive of the other’s endeavors.

Ragan is survived by his wife Margaret; his son, Trey Green of Covington; his daughter, Margaret Elizabeth ( Meg) Green of Memphis, Tennessee; cousins, Dr. Marvin Green (Rusty) of Ruston; Dr. James Green ( Elizabeth) of Ruston, Martha Charlotte Talley of Austin, Texas, William Davis Green of Shreveport, Ann McKenzie Prados of Katy, Texas and Margaret McKenzie of Homer; lifelong friend, college roommate, fraternity brother, and partner in crime Ronald J. Henson of Baton Rouge.

During this time, we have had God’s Angels in our lives to assist and support us. We extend our deepest thanks to all who have made this long journey more bearable.

Much love and appreciation to the Highland Clinic Physicians and staff, and to Ragan’s colleagues in the Orthopedic practice; to Dr. Roan Flenniken, Dr. Jimmy Smith, Dr. Ben Nguyen, Dr. Laurence Hiller, Dr. Robert Hernandez and Dr. Peyman Roohani for their exceptional care and concern.

To Jeff Crane of The Resource Louisiana LLC and his care givers, Sandra Thomas and Lisa Daoud, who were devoted to Ragan.

To the entire staff of The Glen, whose professionalism and attention to patient care were monumental. To Lifepath Hospice, and most particularly “ Kelsey” whose expertise and devotion to their mission was exceptional.

The family request that any donations in Ragan’s memory be made to The Catholic Diocese of Shreveport, SRAC, or to the charity of your choice.

A private graveside for Dr. Green was held on August 7, 2024. A memorial service for Dr. Green will be held at a later date.
