Elsie Marie Higgins Spiller
Funeral Services for Elsie Marie Higgins Spiller, 89, of Ruston, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2021, in the Chapel of Temple Baptist Church, Ruston with Rev. Dale Oden officiating. Interment will follow in Douglas Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home of West Monroe.
Elsie Marie Higgins Spiller was born on March 18, 1932, in rural Greene County, Arkansas. She passed away on September 18, 2021, in her lovely home outside Ruston. For 73 years she was married to Edgar Spiller. They met when Ed’s brother encouraged him to come to the country church to meet some pretty girls.
He only had eyes for Elsie. Their travels moved them from Arkansas to California, Missouri, and Tennessee, before finally settling in Ruston where they have lived for more than 40 years. Elsie always found a great job because of her work ethic developed on the farm.
Her final position was as the office manager for Dr. Dale Boersma for 17 years. Elsie and Ed enjoyed many years of camping and fishing together as well as serving the Lord primarily at Emmanuel and Temple Baptist Churches in Ruston. During a power outage in 1980, they invited neighbors in for a warm meal from their gas stove.
From that point on, most every Friday night for 40 years you would find the “409 Social Club” sharing a potluck dinner somewhere near Parish Road 409.
Elsie is survived by her husband, Ed Spiller; her only child, Lisa Taylor and her husband Terry of West Monroe; granddaughters, Tara Morris (Josh) of St. Francisville, and Sara Richard (Jarrett) of Youngsville; and greatgrandchildren, June and Ruben Morris.
She is pre-deceased by her parents, Tommy and Chattie Higgins of Paragould, Arkansas; and three siblings, Vernon Higgins (Arkansas), Frances Sims (Missouri), and Eual Higgins (Tennessee).
Elsie loved to prepare mission shoeboxes at Christmas time. Please consider memorials to First West Operation Christmas Child, 500 Pine Street, West Monroe, LA 71291.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at the church. The family appreciates your willingness to wear masks for all inside events.
