Jimmy Wayne Gray was called Papa by those who loved him, loved big and loved a bunch! Never having children of his own, he married a mother of four and became the patriarch of a large family. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Lonnie Gray, and became a pillar of the community.
He was happily married to Judy Gray “Meme” for 42 years and he helped raise four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Jimmy worked in the natural gas industry for 50-plus years, and he served faithfully as a greeter and usher at his beloved church, Pisgah Baptist Church.
He served in many other selfless ways to anyone in need and to anyone he loved. Jimmy Wayne had a tremendous love and respect for the outdoors. He successfully fed his family by fishing and running nets on Corney Creek. Jimmy could have probably trapped professionally.
He loved hunting season and enjoyed the company of his hunting dogs through the years. Most of all, he loved his family.
Jimmy Wayne was kind, hard-working, honest, tough, and very loyal, and that is how we will always remember him.
All who knew him loved him, and were drawn in by his kindness, his smile, and his contagious laugh.
He possessed a treasure trove of knowledge that he passed on freely. We are so thankful for every opportunity and memory he provided to us, and the world and our family are much better now from having Jimmy Wayne Gray in it.
Our family has had to watch the progression of Parkinson’s disease and the devastating outcome of the final consequences. We, as a family, hope and pray that a cure will one day be found.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Ruth Gray; and brother, Gene Raymond Gray.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 42 years, Judy Gray; sister, Maureen De’ Bruin; sister-in-law, Goldie Gray; children, Terri Singleton (Randy), Sandi Singleton, Tejo Avery (Victor), and Phillip Flurry (Laura); grandchildren, Andy Singleton (Amanda), Dusty Singleton (Marilynn), Elise Taylor (John), Devin Singleton (Saleena), Sawyer Avery, Cole Singleton (Allison), Jon Lee Avery (Sarah), Larkin Flurry, Camron Flurry, Fallon Flurry, and Jillian Flurry; great grandchildren, Thomas Singleton, Hunter Singleton, Aubrey Singleton, Asa Singleton, Eli Singleton, Brooklynn Singleton, Madison Taylor, Noah Taylor, Jonah Taylor, Micah Taylor, Ella Singleton, Matthew Singleton, Jack Avery, and Hazel Avery; along with numerous family members and friends.
