Ralph Shelton Hubbard

Ralph Shelton Hubbard, III, 71, passed away on December 31, 2020.

Born in Baton Rouge, LA, he was the son of the late Ralph Shelton Hubbard, Jr. and Emma Kohler Hubbard.

Ralph graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1967 as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. He attended Louisiana State University, receiving a B.A. in 1972. Socially engaged and active in school life, he served as president of the Student Council at Baton Rouge High, Junior Division President at LSU and President and Rush Chairman of his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha. He received a M.A. in Russian His tory from LSU in 1974.

Upon declaring “There is no future in history,” he continued his education at Tulane University School of Law and graduated in 1977, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and Tulane Law Review. Ralph was a named partner of Lugenbuhl, Wheaton, Peck, Rankin and Hubbard in New Orleans, Louisiana and a leading insurance coverage practitioner. He was a frequent lecturer and author, serving as co-author of The Louisiana Environ mental Law Handbook (Lawyers Cooperative Publishing) and on the board of editors of various national publications.

Ralph was routinely recognized by organizations such as Best Lawyers in America, Best Lawyers in New Orleans and Louisiana Super Lawyers for his outstanding work. His dry wit was the defining hallmark of his personality. Dubbed “King of the One-Liners” by a New Orleans judge, he was capable of diffusing tense moments with self-deprecating humor.

Ralph is survived by his wife of 40 years, Nancy Hubbard (née Henderson) of Ruston, LA; two daughters, Jessica Hubbard of Columbus, OH and Caroline Hubbard of New Orleans, LA; and his brother, Lt. Col (Ret), USAF, Warren Shelton Hubbard and his wife Fran, of Epworth, GA.

He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Alison Hubbard Ashton of Durham, NC.

Burial services were private.
