GSU splits softball doubleheader

HOUSTON — The Grambling State softball team (11-16, 8-8 SWAC) split its doubleheader with Prairie View (15-13, 12-5 SWAC) here on Tuesday afternoon, winning game one 6-3 before falling 6-5 in game two.

The Lady Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a solo home run to right field by Cameron Ellis which marked her first home run of the season to get things started. The Lady Panthers answered in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single that tied the game 1-1.

After a scoreless third inning, Grambling went ahead in the top of the fifth inning plating. runs in consecutive innings.

Anaiyah Fultz was able to tie up the game in the fourth inning, hitting a solo shot to center field. The Lady Tigers were able to score two more runs in the top of the fifth with a single RBI from both Tytianna Robinson and Nyah Jones. Grambling plated another run in the sixth on an error by Prairie View to secure the victory in game one.

The Lady Tigers started hot in the second game of the doubleheader with a two-run home run by Fultz to get scoring started in the first inning. Cameron Ellis continued to have a good day at the plate by hitting a two-run double to left center in the second inning to give the Lady Tigers an early 2-0 lead.

After scoreless first and second innings, a combination of solid hitting for Prairie View and the Lady Tigers errors in the in the third and fourth inning allowed the Lady Panthers to tie the game 4-4.

Grambling answered back in the top of the fifth inning to gain the lead back, as India Wells scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Tigers a 5-4 lead. Prairie View answered in the bottom of the fifth inning by plating a run to tie the game 5-5. The Lady Tigers attempted to rally back in the sixth and seventh, but the Lady Panthers secured the win with a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
