Robert Harling wrote Steel Magnolias as a tribute to the courage of his sister, mother and their support system of neighborhood women in Natchitoches. Released more than 30 years ago, the film by the same name was hailed as a celebration of women. And not just any type of women. Strong women. The kind we call steel magnolias.

The Louisiana Tech University Faculty and Staff Club kicked off the new year with a special program by Deanna Houston of Tool City in Ruston. Houston spoke to the group about spring planting, composting, hobby greenhouses and other topics of interest as folks begin thinking about preparing gardens and flower beds. Houston also talked about the various plant varieties that will be available for purchase at Tool City as the local business expands its efforts to include unique offerings for the community.
