Elbert Graham (Bert) Warren, Jr.

Elbert Graham (Bert) Warren, Jr., age 97, passed away peacefully at home in Baytown, Texas, on October 19, 2022. Born on August 9, 1925, in Dubach, Louisiana, he was the son of Elbert G. and Nettie McGee Warren. Because his father was the principal, the family lived on the school grounds of the town’s one school building housing first grade through high school. Bert was particularly embarrassed when his mother disciplined him on the school grounds from an open window in their home. He played football, basketball, and baseball, graduating from Dubach High School as valedictorian in 1942. His college years at Louisiana Tech were interrupted by World War II when he joined the U. S. Navy at the age of 17. He later said he wasn’t sure how he ended up in the Navy, because he had severe seasickness. Bert served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific theater, and was in Okinawa, Japan, when the war ended. Returning to Louisiana Tech, he graduated cum laude in 1948 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. While at Tech, he served as President of several organizations and honor societies. After graduating from Georgia Tech in 1949 with a master’s degree in electrical engineering, he joined Humble Oil and Refining in Baytown. After saving money for a year, Bert married his college sweetheart, Jennye Lou Evans Warren, on May 7, 1950. The couple lived in Baytown for 71 years where they raised four children, and the family is a long-time member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.

Please forgive me if you were unaware but there was so much to do. Thank you my sister Bea for helping me get through. God called Mama home on August 29, two days short of her 98th birthday just after she had eaten, been dressed, and had that beautiful silver hair combed. It was time.

Joe “Allen” Young, age 80, was called into eternal rest with Our Lord and Savior on Monday, October 10, 2022, at Alpine Nursing Home in Ruston. The funeral service, honoring the life of Allen, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Rocky Springs Baptist Church, 423 Rocky Springs Road in Homer. Officiating the service will be Pastor Kirk Jones.

Andrew Banks Lawrence Jr., born February 3, 1938, passed away on October 5, 2022. Information concerning his memorial service is to be determined at a later date. Mr. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Banks Lawrence Sr. and Mellie Bob Rogers. He is survived by his wife, Karen Alice Jones Lawrence; their sons, Mark Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence and wife Kelley Lawrence, and Michael Lawrence; sister, Bobbie Petit; grandchildren, Jordan Lawrence, Nicholas Lawrence, Macie Lawrence Flores, Caroline Lawrence; great grandchildren Lawson Edward Duhon and Ledger Banks Duhon. Born in Vivian, Louisiana, Mr. Lawrence was a retired U.S. Army Veteran who served 2 tours in Vietnam. He also had an avid passion for aviation, was a crop-duster and cargo pilot, and a flight instructor. Mr. Lawrence attended Texas A& M in College Station, Texas, and graduated from Louisiana Tech in Ruston. Andrew Banks Lawrence had a wonderful heart and always lent a hand to help others. He was deeply loved by his wife and family and will be missed. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Northern Louisiana Medical Center in Ruston, and Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe. Stephen Andrew Webre

Stephen Andrew Webre, 75, passed away at his home in Ruston on September 12, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Webre was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the son of Andrew S. Webre and Jayne Ellis Farrar Webre. He attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) earning a B.A. in History. Following his service in the United States Navy in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and in the Canal Zone in Panama during the Vietnam War, he attended Tulane University in New Orleans earning a M.A. in History and a PhD in Latin American History. He was curator of Hispanic manuscripts at the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans from 198082. He was a professor of History at Louisiana Tech University from 1982 until his retirement with the rank of Professor Emeritus in 2017.
