The Ruston 8U Americans baseball club defeated Girard 1-0 on Sunday for the Louisiana Dixie Youth baseball state championship, thus clinching a spot in the world championship in Dothan, Alabama, beginning on July 28.
JONESBORO — At its monthly meeting on Monday night, the Jackson Parish Recreation Board announced that an archery tournament will take place at the sports complex on July 30, and that the Piney Woods three-man golf tournament will be held on Aug. 13 and 14 at the Jackson Parish Golf Course.

The Ruston 6U SweeTees captured the state tournament over Minden and East Ouachita this past weekend in Tioga and will be advancing to the Dixie World Series, also in Tioga, July 30 through Aug. 2.
It was probably 20 years ago when I made my first and only visit to a Louisiana lake that has its ups and downs. I’m talking about Lake Yucatan, one of the many oxbow lakes in close proximity to the Mississippi River. My friend Mike Gammill from Oak Grove took me to the lake to give the crappie a try. We didn’t catch many but I was impressed by the size of the slabs we caught.
