Richard Berry ‘Dickie’ Hinton
Ruston native Richard Berry “Dickie” Hinton passed away on August 1, 2022, at his home in Frisco, Texas, after a long illness. He was 87.
Richard was born in Camden, Arkansas. He was the oldest son of legendary Louisiana Tech baseball coach Berry Hinton and Mary Agnes Hammond Hinton.
After living in Junction City for a few years, Richard spent most of his childhood at their home on Louisiana Tech campus, where the family raised chickens and Boston Terrier dogs. He attended Ruston High School, where he lettered in three sports, and Louisiana Tech. He graduated from Tech with a degree in education.
Richard was a veteran, having served in the Army in Germany and in the National Guard. He played baseball while in the Army. He also played minor league baseball for a while, once on a team with his father, Berry. In 1962, Richard married the love of his life, Alice Marie Davis. Through 60 years of marriage they had three children and an ever-extended family of cats and dogs.
Richard’s love was his family and his passion was teaching young people. He taught and coached high school before taking the job of assistant principal at Ruston High, a position he held for many years. A regular at every sports event, he was beloved by his students, who referred to him as “Coach.”
Richard was a longstanding member of the Ruston Country Club, playing golf with his friends there most days and cards many nights. Richard and Alice Marie moved to Texas in 2008, but a big part of their hearts were always in Ruston. Richard kept up with Ruston High football games and Louisiana Tech games for many years. He continued to follow his home-state Saints for more than a decade before he gave in and became a Cowboys fan.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Marie of Dallas, Texas; son, Bill and daughter-in-law Janice of Yantis, Texas; son, Curt and daughter-in-law Nan of Wenatchee, Washington; son, Mike and daughter-in-law Rose of Baton Rouge; granddaughters. Lauren and Evey; sister, Betty of Dallas; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother Bobby.
