Shirley Marie Henderson

Shirley Marie Henderson was born in Opelousas, Louisiana, the second daughter of Christopher and Wilma St. Andrew, on July 5, 1927, and departed this life Sunday, June 2, 2019.

She was educated at Holy Ghost Catholic School and graduated as valedictorian of her class. She received a B.S. degree from Grambling State College and a master’s degree from The State University of Iowa City. Further study was done at Grambling State University, Louisiana Tech, University of Oregon, UCLA and Pepperdine University.

Her teaching career took her to Sunset Colored School, North Elementary in Opelousas, Grambling State University, Hillcrest in Los Angeles, Harris in Virginia.

She is a Gold Life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Platinum member of The Links, Incorporated. She is a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Grambling, LA.

She has received numerous awards, medals, recognition, and plaques for community service.

Visitation will be held from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2019, at St. Benedict Catholic ChurchGrambling,LA. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2019 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Grambling, LA. Interment will be at Bellevue Cemetery in Opelousas, LA. Arrangements are under the directions of King’s Funeral Home, 1511 W. California Ave., Ruston, LA.
