Evelyn Hester

Evelyn L. Hester was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Evelyn departed her life on Monday, February 7, 2022.

She was born September 9, 1931, to Oscar Harris and Mable Medlock Harris Cheeks in Monroe. She received her education at Little Flower Academy in Monroe.

Evelyn married David Lee Hester on April 22, 1953, in Monroe and to that union five children were born. After moving her family from Monroe to Grambling in 1964, she began working at Grambling College (now Grambling State University) at the A.C. Lewis Memorial Library where she retired in 1989.

She was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church of Grambling. Evelyn was known for speaking her mind and caring for all her children and grandchildren.

Evelyn loved gardening, morning coffee, eating strawberry ice cream, watching television, going to garage sales, and playing bingo at the Community “Rec” Center in Grambling.

Evelyn is proceeded in death by her parents; her husband, David L. Hester, Sr.; brothers, Gene and Percy Harris; her sister, Martha V. Pierce; and her greatgrandson, Nycholas Hester.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, Tommie Jean Wright, David L. Hester Jr., Reba Lewis, Tammie Hester all of Grambling, and Jacqueline Youngblood Evans of Douglasville, Georgia.

She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and family.

Evelyn’s memory will forever remain in the lives of her children, grandchildren, family and to all who knew her. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Grambling and burial will follow at Grambling Memorial Garden in Grambling under the direction of Millers Funeral Home of Monroe.

Family will receive visitors and friends on Friday, February 18, 2022, at Millers Funeral Home in Monroe from 1-5 p.m.
