Louisiana Tech defensive back Michael Richard was named the 2023 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday.

Richard led C-USA freshmen with seven pass breakups, which ranked seventh nationally among FBS freshmen. Opponents completed just 40% of passes (14-of-35) against him this season, allowing just one touchdown in 249 defensive snaps.

His 83.5 coverage grade was the fourth-best mark among all C-USA defensive backs. The New Orleans native also tallied 32 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and two quarterback hurries. On special teams, Richard was one of three C-USA players to return a punt for a touchdown this season when he returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in the season finale against Jacksonville State.

Richard’s Freshman of the Year selection marks the first time a Bulldog has earned the distinction since 2012, when running back Kenneth Dixon was named WAC Freshman of the Year.
