Murphy qualifies for 121st US Amateur

Louisiana Tech golfer Sam Murphy shot a 6-under 136 in Alabama to qualify for the 121st U.S. Amateur Championship.


DECATUR, Ala. — Louisiana Tech fifthyear senior golfer Sam Murphy qualified to compete in the 121st US Amateur Championship after placing second in Monday’s qualifying round in his hometown of Decatur, Ala.

Murphy finished the day with a 6-under (70-66=136, second). The senior Bulldog carded seven birdies in Monday’s two rounds.

He also registered two eagles with one on hole 13 in the first round and another on hole 16 in the second.

The 121st U.S. Amateur Championship will take place at the at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club from Aug. 9-15. Murphy last competed in the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.

Sophomore Will Patrick and freshman Grant Smith also competed in Monday’s qualifier. Patrick finished the day with a 3-under (65-74=139), while Smith finished with a +7 (75-74=149).
